Summary: This article looks at the association of radiographically diagnosed “J-shaped” lesions and root fractures. The goal of this article is to dispel the myth that root fracture is the primary cause of a J-shaped lesion.
Learning Objectives: After reading this article, the individual will be able to (1) define a vertical root fracture (VRF), (2) diagnose a VRF, (3) differentiate between a cracked tooth and a VRF, (4) understand the patterns of bone loss associated with VRFs, and (5) understand when a J-shaped lesion is suggestive of a root fracture.
